Mairena del Alcor's Local Police will participate in the DGT's Special Campaign to control alcohol and drugs among drivers, from July 13 to 19, 2026. The aim is to reduce accidents on urban roads.

Drivers in Mairena del Alcor will face intensive alcohol and drug checks starting next Monday, July 13. The Local Police has joined the special campaign of the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT), which will run until July 19, with the goal of reducing accidents related to substance use.

Checks throughout the municipality

Officers will set up checkpoints on various streets and avenues in the urban area without prior notice. The campaign focuses not only on car drivers but also on motorcyclists, cyclists, and pedestrians, as alcohol affects all users of public roads.

According to the DGT, alcohol is involved in one in three fatal accidents in Spain. Depending on the blood alcohol level, the risk of suffering an accident can increase up to 15 times. Therefore, the Provincial Traffic Headquarters insists that the only safe level is 0.0%.

Drugs, a growing danger in urban areas

In addition to alcohol, the consumption of drugs such as cannabis, cocaine, or amphetamines is concerning. In urban areas, the presence of these substances is slightly higher than on interurban roads, according to DGT data. Therefore, checks in Mairena del Alcor will include saliva tests to detect drugs.

The combined use of alcohol and drugs is particularly dangerous. Authorities remind that even small amounts can impair reflexes and reaction capacity while driving.

Awareness and zero tolerance

The campaign is part of the Spanish Road Safety Strategy 2030, which promotes zero tolerance for risky behaviours. Mairena del Alcor's Local Police aims to reinforce the prevention message and contribute to national data collection.

For residents, this measure means greater safety on the streets of the municipality. During the campaign week, it is recommended to plan trips and, if alcohol is to be consumed, to use public transport or designate a sober driver.

Checks will be conducted at varying times, both day and night, to cover different high-risk moments. The fine for testing positive for alcohol or drugs can range from 500 to 1,000 euros, in addition to the loss of driving licence points.

“The only safe level is 0.0%,” the DGT reminds.

The campaign will end on Sunday, July 19, but local officers will maintain regular surveillance throughout the rest of the summer. Drivers in Mairena del Alcor are warned: tolerance is zero.
