Mayor José Luis Sanz and ASET president Jorge Robles sign a protocol to involve the tourism sector in the commemoration of the centenary of the 1929 Ibero-American Exhibition.

The mayor of Seville, José Luis Sanz, and the president of the Sevillian Association of Tourist Businesses (ASET), Jorge Robles, signed a protocol of intentions on Wednesday that lays the groundwork for public-private collaboration for the celebration of the centenary of the Ibero-American Exhibition of 1929, known as Seville 2029.

A city project with tourism as the driving force

The agreement, as reported by the City Council in a statement, aims to integrate the tourism business fabric into the planning and development of commemorative activities. The goal is for Seville 2029 to become a city project that transcends the institutional and mobilises the entire society.

The protocol will allow for progress in future collaboration agreements and specific actions that contribute to consolidating this commemoration as a driver of economic, tourist, and social development for the city. ASET's participation, which includes hotels, travel agencies, and other tourism agents, is key to disseminating the actions linked to the anniversary.

Public-private collaboration, key to the legacy

During the signing, the mayor emphasised that Seville 2029 can only be built through the sum of efforts and the involvement of the entire society. In his statements, he stressed that the aim is for this commemoration to “leave a lasting legacy, strengthening public-private collaboration, valuing our heritage, and consolidating Seville as an internationally renowned, modern, sustainable, and future-oriented tourist destination.”

For his part, Jorge Robles, president of ASET, positively assessed the agreement and noted that the Sevillian tourism sector is willing to actively collaborate to ensure the anniversary is a success. The centenary of the 1929 Expo is a unique opportunity to project the best image of Seville to the world and generate new growth opportunities.

What does it mean for the people of Seville?

For the people of Seville, this protocol translates into a roadmap that seeks to highlight the historical, heritage, and cultural legacy of the Ibero-American Exhibition. Future initiatives are expected to include everything from the restoration of emblematic buildings to the organisation of cultural events and exhibitions. Tourism, one of the main economic engines of the city, could see a significant boost in the coming years.

Moreover, public-private collaboration will allow small and medium-sized tourism businesses to benefit from the visibility that the commemoration will generate. The idea is for Seville 2029 not to go unnoticed by the residents but to become a source of pride for the city.

The protocol signed today is just the first step. In the coming months, specific agreements are expected to materialise that detail the concrete actions. The City Council and ASET will work hand in hand to ensure that the centenary of the 1929 Expo marks a turning point in the history of Seville.
