The Mairena del Aljarafe Town Hall has opened the deadline for companies to submit bids to transform the playgrounds of the eight public schools in the municipality. The project, co-financed by the European Union, aims to create greener, shaded, and accessible spaces.
The Mairena del Aljarafe Town Hall has put out to tender the renaturalisation project for the playgrounds of the eight Early Childhood and Primary Education Centres in the municipality. Interested companies can submit their bids until the upcoming 15th of July. The base tender budget amounts to €578,744, VAT included, and the investment is co-financed by the European Union.
More shade and vegetation to combat the heat
The action aims to create more comfortable, accessible outdoor spaces adapted to high temperatures, which is particularly relevant in a municipality in the Aljarafe region of Seville where summers are becoming increasingly sweltering. The project includes increasing the presence of vegetation and shaded areas, promoting soil permeability, and improving the connection and accessibility between different areas of the playgrounds.
Additionally, it is planned to reinforce the educational function of these spaces by creating areas that facilitate outdoor learning and students' contact with biodiversity and responsible water use. There is also a goal to expand play options to promote inclusion, offering alternatives adapted for all children.
“We want the playgrounds to stop being asphalt surfaces and become lively, educational, and healthy spaces,” municipal sources state.
The eight schools benefiting
The action includes the schools El Olivo, Francisco Giner de los Ríos, Guadalquivir, Lepanto, Los Rosales, Malala, Miguel Hernández, and Santa Teresa. It is a comprehensive intervention that follows other measures such as the installation of non-invasive bamboo in some centres, which has yielded good results as a green and shaded screen.
The project is part of the Integrated Action Plan (PAI) 'Mairena Connected', with which the Town Hall promotes projects aimed at improving the quality of life for citizens through urban, social, environmental, and digital transformation of the municipality. This plan has a total of €9 million from the Local Integrated Development Strategy (EDIL), funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) of the European Union and managed by the Ministry of Finance.
For the residents of Mairena, this investment represents a direct improvement in their children's daily lives: the playgrounds will be cooler, with more shaded and play areas, and will also serve as outdoor classrooms. The works, if awarded on time, could begin in late summer or early autumn, with the expectation that they will be ready for the 2026-2027 school year.
A step closer to sustainability
The renaturalisation of school playgrounds is part of a growing trend in municipalities across Spain, but in Mairena del Aljarafe, it takes on special significance due to the Town Hall's commitment to sustainability. The 'Yesterday Today Mairena' initiative encompasses various urban transformation actions, and this is one of the most visible for families.
The deadline for submitting bids ends on the 15th of July, and the award will be announced in the following weeks. Parents in the municipality can consult the tender documents on the Town Hall's electronic headquarters.
