Mayor José María Soriano received this Monday the athletes from Tomares who have excelled nationally and internationally in rowing, water polo, rhythmic gymnastics and taekwondo during the 2025-2026 season.
The Town Hall of Tomares wanted to recognise the effort and achievements of its most outstanding athletes at an event held in the Plenary Hall. The mayor, José María Soriano, accompanied by the Sports delegate, Antonio Parrilla, and the families of the honorees, presented diplomas and words of congratulations to around twenty athletes who have put the municipality's name at the top of the national and international sports scene.
Among those recognised were representatives from the Sevilla Nautical Club in rowing, the Spanish National Water Polo Team, rhythmic gymnastics, and the local taekwondo clubs Aljamar and Leo's Kimdo. The mayor highlighted that it is a source of pride for Tomares to have top-level athletes in such diverse disciplines. "Congratulations to the athletes from Tomares who succeed with their teams and clubs; they are an example for all," Soriano stated.
In rowing, the most notable achievements belong to Javier García Ordoñez, who became the Spanish champion in several categories and secured fourth place at the 2025 World Championship in Shanghai, as well as at the I World Cup 2026 in Seville. He also competed in the III World Cup in Lucerne and is scheduled to participate in the World Championship in Amsterdam in August. Juan Jesús Ortega Fernández, on the other hand, was the national runner-up and tenth in the youth European Championship in Brandenburg, and is pre-selected for the Youth Cup or the World Championship in Plovdiv. Inés Izquierdo Ojeda and Ángela Borreguero Albenca also achieved national titles and pre-selections, while Joaquín Borreguero Albenca was crowned Spanish champion in the youth coxed four. In lower categories, Irene de Vera Cruz, Jorge Montaño Vallejo, Jaime Contreras and Guillermo Girón added several national podiums.
In master rowing, Jaime Carrasco González participated in the World Rowing Masters Regatta, the equivalent of the world championship for veterans, achieving second place in the coxless pair category C.
Water polo also had its representation with athletes who have defended the Spanish National Team jersey in international competitions, although the Town Hall did not specify any names. In rhythmic gymnastics, the athletes from Tomares have shone in national championships, and in taekwondo, the clubs Aljamar and Leo's Kimdo have won titles in national and international categories.
The event served to highlight the work of young athletes and the support of their families, as well as that of local clubs that promote grassroots sports. The mayor encouraged those present to continue striving and to represent Tomares with pride in future competitions.
The athletes will continue their competitive calendar in the coming weeks, with events such as the Spanish Rowing Championship in Seville and the World and European Cups scheduled for the summer.
