The Brotherhood of Calle Real de Castilleja de la Cuesta has commissioned a new embroidered mantolín for San Juan Evangelista, which will be added to the mystery step of the Most Holy Christ of the Vera Cruz.
The Embroidery Workshop of the Virgen de los Dolores Foundation will be responsible for executing the piece, whose design has been created by Javier Sánchez de los Reyes. The mantolín, in a 19th-century style, features a perimeter border of leaves in series and a central field with smaller stems and leaves, following a sober and elegant ornamental line.
The work is inspired by the characteristic embroideries of 19th-century workshops, particularly those of Teresa del Castillo and Antonio del Canto, and takes as a reference the processional mantle of Our Lady of the Valley, patroness of Manzanilla (Huelva). The brotherhood thus seeks to reinforce the aesthetics of the mystery without breaking with tradition.
San Juan Evangelista is a processional image created by Darío Fernández Parra, incorporated into the mystery alongside Saint Mary Magdalene, also by the same author. Both images complete the scene of the Calvary that accompanies the Most Holy Christ of the Vera Cruz and Our Lady of Piety. The mystery took a decisive step in 2019 with the premiere of the new processional step, which allowed for a renewed presentation.
The Most Holy Christ of the Vera Cruz is an anonymous carving from the early 17th century, while Our Lady of Piety is attributed to Pedro Roldán. The images of San Juan and Magdalena, created by Darío Fernández, complete the iconographic reading of the Calvary.
With this project, the Brotherhood of Calle Real continues its line of heritage growth, betting on artisanal embroidery and on a work aimed at enriching one of the great devotional moments of Castilleja: the Return of Holy Thursday. The new mantolín will join the processional textile ensemble of San Juan Evangelista, contributing to the aesthetic harmony of the mystery.
The brotherhood has not yet confirmed the premiere date, but it is expected that the piece will be showcased during the upcoming Holy Week. The brothers and devotees will be able to closely follow the embroidery process through the official channels of the corporation.
